Connect WordPress.org forums

Turn new topics on your WordPress.org plugin and theme forums into Repile tickets with a drafted forum reply.

New topics on your WordPress.org support forums become tickets in Repile. The agent reads the whole topic and saves a draft forum reply. You check the draft and post it yourself.

Before you start

You need:

  • The slug of each plugin or theme whose forum you support, for example akismet.
  • The display names your team uses on forum posts.
  • The Repile desktop app, if you want to post replies from Repile. In the browser, you copy the reply and paste it on WordPress.org.

You do not need an API key. Repile reads the public forum pages.

Add your forums

  1. In Repile, open Settings, then WordPress.org under Inboxes. The Connection tab opens.
  2. Under Forums, find Add a forum.
  3. Enter a plugin or theme slug, or its wordpress.org address. These all work: akismet, plugin/akismet, theme/astra, or the forum address.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Repeat for each forum.

Add your team

Repile must know which posts come from your team. Otherwise your replies look like your users' posts.

  1. Open the Team tab.
  2. Enter a name exactly as it shows on your forum posts. Use your display name, such as Jane Doe, not your username.
  3. Click Add.

The plugin's or theme's WordPress.org contributors, and posts with a WordPress.org support badge, count as your team without any setup.

Choose a project

Open the Routing tab and set Project. The agent uses that project's instructions, memory and default model. If you leave it empty, Repile uses your personal project.

On the Instructions tab, write the steps and the reply you want on every topic.

How Repile learns about new topics

Repile checks each forum's public feed and forum page every five minutes. This check always runs, so nothing is missed. You can make updates faster:

  • If your server is hosted on repile.app, repile.app follows your forums and passes each new topic and reply to Repile within seconds. The header shows Instant updates on when this works.
  • You can also forward WordPress.org notification emails to Repile. Open How instant updates work on the Connection tab and see Forward forum emails.

To forward emails with Gmail:

  1. Subscribe to your forum on WordPress.org.
  2. Copy the address under Forward forum emails. On repile.app hosting, enter a name and click Claim address first.
  3. In Gmail, add a filter for emails from wordpress.org that forwards them to that address.
  4. Gmail sends a confirmation code first. It shows under Recent emails in the same section.

Without repile.app hosting, send the emails to an inbound email service, such as Cloudflare Email Routing, Postmark or Mailgun, that posts each email to the URL shown there. To replace that URL, click New address. The old one stops working.

Emails only start threads for topics on your forums.

Post replies from the desktop app

  1. In the Repile desktop app, open the Connection tab.
  2. Under Posting replies, click Sign in next to WordPress.org account.
  3. Sign in to WordPress.org in the window that opens.

WordPress.org has no posting API, so the app keeps this sign-in and posts the reply as you.

What happens after you connect

  • Each new topic starts one ticket thread. A topic with replies starts with every post.
  • Topics your team started are skipped. Topics already resolved or answered by your team never start a thread.
  • The agent's reply shows as a draft card with Edit and Post to forum.
  • Post to forum posts the reply as you and closes the ticket. The card then shows Posted and a View on WordPress.org link.
  • In the browser, Copy and open topic copies the reply and opens the topic.
  • A ticket is Active when a user posted last. It is Closed when your team posted last, or the topic is resolved, closed or deleted. A new user post makes it Active again, even on a resolved topic.

Troubleshooting

  • "Posting from here needs the Repile desktop app.": you are in the browser. Use Copy and open topic, or open the desktop app.
  • "Sign in to WordPress.org to post this reply.": click Post to forum again and finish the sign-in.
  • "This topic does not accept replies. It may be closed.": the topic is closed on WordPress.org.
  • "WordPress.org did not confirm the reply.": open the topic and check if your reply is there before you post again.
  • Header says "Instant updates failed": open How instant updates work to see the error, then click Refresh instant updates. The five-minute check still runs.
  • Forwarded emails do nothing: check Recent emails. An email with no topic link shows its text there.
